The816

Well hello there!

The816 is the blog of Chris Riebschlager. He's a web developer, Kansas City resident and writer of funny lists.

Hey Kansas City friends, if you missed the plaza lighting ceremony tonight, I’ve created an animated gif that will give you an idea of the excitement and wonder that you can only experience during such an amazing event.

Ways In Which My Life Has Changed Since Becoming The Pitch’s “Best Comedy Blog”

  • People are starting to recognize me on the street and say things like, “Why are you laying on the street?”
  • Many local bars stopped charging me for ice.
  • My self-esteem has reached levels I haven’t experienced since puberty.
  • The city decided to change the name of Avenida Cesar E Chavez to Chris M Riebschlager Avenue.
  • Googling my name now shows more results for my blog, fewer results for “lewd conduct conviction.”
  • I’m once again allowed inside the Ward Parkway Target store, on a trial basis.
  • Food just seems to taste better now.

I’m Somebody!

I’m really honored and giddy as a schoolgirl to be part of The Pitch’s 2011 Best of Kansas City. The816 is now legally the best comedy blog in town until 2012. Wow. Thanks guys, I think you’re totally swell also.

Whatever. I once saw the side of a boob.

The new Sporting KC park looks pretty nice, but five minutes in Photoshop just made it ten times better.

Monet’s Water Lilies and My First Big Digital Installation

My friends and co-conspirators John Kreicbergs and Tim O’Neill have been working insanely hard this year to create the digital installations to support the Nelson-Atkins’ Monet exhibit. I’m ridiculously giddy with how well it turned out and I hope you all check it out starting April 9th.

Pictured above is the “create your own Monet” painting app that I developed. It’s a simple painting app that allows visitors to create their own work and save it to an online gallery. The touch screen is really fun to use and I think people will really like it.

Also, we created a projection piece we’re calling a “tag cloud”. Visitors can type a one or two word impression of how they felt about the piece on a tablet computer. All the user-submitted words are then projected onto the wall above in what looks like a fountain of words.

An amazing Flickr set of Sanborn Fire Insurance maps. I love this typography, I love that people in 1895 cared enough to make this cover look so beautiful. Today this cover would be a stock shot of The Scout with a Copperplate headline.

Hat tip to Mr. Sean Berger.
